No grounds to charge cop in man’s death
There are no grounds to charge a York Regional Police officer in relation to a man’s death in Newmarket, the province’s Special Investigat hermes uk ions Unit announced today.
The man, 56, who was arrested after causing a disturbance at the Davis Drive Tim Hortons July 25, appears to have died because his airway was blocked with bags in marijuana.
Before he was taken out of the vehicle, he appeared to have a seizure in the back of the police vehicle and he was taken to Southlake Regional Health Centre by ambulance, arr hermes uk iving without vital signs.
As doctors attempted to intubate him, they found his airway was blocked by clear plastic baggies fille hermes uk d with marijuana.
He was placed on life support, but died the next day.
The female officer who took him to the station had no reason to suspect he had the baggies in his mouth o hermes uk r that they were obstructing his airway, SIU director Ian Scott said.
my view, the subject officer did nothing wrong in these circumstances,” he added.
The SIU is an arm length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
